SQL Working with Dates
You can compare two dates easily if there is no time component involved!
Assume we have the following «Orders» table:
OrderId | ProductName | OrderDate |
---|---|---|
1 | Geitost | 2008-11-11 |
2 | Camembert Pierrot | 2008-11-09 |
3 | Mozzarella di Giovanni | 2008-11-11 |
4 | Mascarpone Fabioli | 2008-10-29 |
Now we want to select the records with an OrderDate of «2008-11-11» from the table above.
We use the following SELECT statement:
SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate=’2008-11-11′
The result-set will look like this:
OrderId | ProductName | OrderDate |
---|---|---|
1 | Geitost | 2008-11-11 |
3 | Mozzarella di Giovanni | 2008-11-11 |
Now, assume that the «Orders» table looks like this (notice the time component in the «OrderDate» column):
OrderId | ProductName | OrderDate |
---|---|---|
1 | Geitost | 2008-11-11 13:23:44 |
2 | Camembert Pierrot | 2008-11-09 15:45:21 |
3 | Mozzarella di Giovanni | 2008-11-11 11:12:01 |
4 | Mascarpone Fabioli | 2008-10-29 14:56:59 |
If we use the same SELECT statement as above:
SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate=’2008-11-11′
we will get no result! This is because the query is looking only for dates with no time portion.
Tip: To keep your queries simple and easy to maintain, do not allow time components in your dates!

MySQL DATE_FORMAT examples
Let’s take a look at the table in the sample database.
To select the order’s data and format the date value, you use the following statement:
We formatted the order date, required date, and shipped date of each order based on different date formats specified by the format strings.
MySQL with
See the following example:
In the query, we selected all orders whose shipped date are not and sorted the orders by the shipped date. However, the orders were not sorted correctly.
The reason is that we used as the alias for the output of the function, which is a string, the ORDER BY clause took the alias and sorted the orders based on string values, not date values.
To fix this problem, we have to use an alias that is different from the column name; see the following statement:
In this tutorial, we have shown you how to use the MySQL function to format the date based on a specified format.

Пример
Рассмотрим примеры MySQL функции STR_TO_DATE, чтобы понять, как использовать функцию STR_TO_DATE в MySQL. Например:
MySQL

#Результат: 2015-02-13
mysql> SELECT STR_TO_DATE(‘March,14,2015’, ‘%M,%e,%Y’);
#Результат: 2015-03-14
mysql> SELECT STR_TO_DATE(‘Friday, February 13, 2015’, ‘%W, %M %e, %Y’);
#Результат: 2015-02-13
mysql> SELECT STR_TO_DATE(‘2014,2,28 09’, ‘%Y,%m,%d %h’);
#Результат: 2014-02-28 09:00:00

The s parameter indicates the maximum number of digits stored to the right of the decimal point. s must be a value from 0 to p. Default value is 0 |
5-17 bytes |
numeric(p,s) | Fixed precision and scale numbers.
Allows numbers from -10^38 +1 to 10^38 –1. The p parameter indicates the maximum total number of digits that can be stored (both to the left and to the right of the decimal point). p must be a value from 1 to 38. Default is 18. The s parameter indicates the maximum number of digits stored to the right of the decimal point. s must be a value from 0 to p. Default value is 0 |

Introduction to MySQL DATE data type
MySQL is one of the five temporal data types used for managing date values. MySQL uses format for storing a date value. This format is fixed and it is not possible to change it.
For example, you may prefer to use format but you can’t. Instead, you follow the standard date format and use the function to format the date the way you want.
MySQL uses 3 bytes to store a value. The values range from to . If you want to store a date value that is out of this range, you need to use a non-temporal data type like integer e.g., three columns, and each column for the year, month, and day. You also need to create stored functions to simulate the built-in date functions provided by MySQL, which is not recommended.
When strict mode is disabled, MySQL converts any invalid date e.g., to the zero date value .
